You could take a look at MagnitudeFilter and see if you can do a similar thing, where you extract the texture image and calculate the magnitude of the RGB value of each texel and write that to the magnitude volume. The built in converters are not designed for RGB data, though, so you'll have to extract the image data manually.

Thanks for the tip. Deriving a new entire scalar volume turned out to be rather slow with 256^3 images. I wrote another version of MagnitudeExtractor and extended the GradientKernel in order to extract the gradient of an individual channel on the fly, which minimises loading time for us.
